Stride Length Calculator

Work out your stride length from steps and distance, and compare it with height-based estimates.

Measured beats estimated

Stride length is distance divided by steps. Walking 1 km in 1,250 steps gives 80 cm per step, which is a normal brisk-walking stride for an adult. Height-based formulas are only a starting point: they assume average proportions and no change in pace.

Stride, step and cadence

Strictly, a stride is two steps, but most wearables and pedometers count steps, so the everyday usage has drifted. Cadence is steps per minute; speed is cadence multiplied by step length. That relationship explains why increasing cadence at the same speed shortens the step and usually reduces braking forces.

What changes your stride

Speed is the biggest factor, then terrain and fatigue. Uphill running shortens the step dramatically; downhill lengthens it. In the last 10 km of a marathon, stride often shortens by 5–10% while cadence stays similar, which is why pace falls even when effort rises.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a normal stride length?

Walking: 70–80 cm. Running: 100–130 cm, depending on height and pace. The calculator shows what yours actually is.

How do I count steps over a known distance?

Use a phone or watch, or count for 100 m and multiply by ten. A measured 400 m track is ideal.

Does a longer stride make me faster?

Up to a point. Overstriding beyond your natural range usually increases braking and impact without adding speed.
