Easy should feel easy
Easy pace sits between 59% and 74% of VO2max, which for most runners is 60–90 seconds per kilometre slower than marathon pace. A 22-minute 5K runner should be running easy miles around 5:30–6:10 per kilometre, not at 4:40 because it feels like training.
The talk test
You should be able to speak in full sentences, breathe through your nose if you choose, and finish the run feeling like you could have gone further. If none of that is true, the pace is too fast regardless of what the watch says. Heart rate drift in heat can push the number around by 10 bpm without any change in effort.
Why easy volume works
Easy running builds capillaries, mitochondria and tendon resilience with a fraction of the recovery cost of threshold work. It also lets you absorb two quality sessions a week. The runners who improve fastest are usually the ones who slow their easy days down, not the ones who add more hard ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Zone 2 the same as easy pace?
Broadly yes, though Zone 2 is a heart rate or lactate definition. Easy pace by race result usually lands in the same place without needing a lactate test.
Why is my easy pace slower than my friend's?
Because fitness differs. Easy pace is individual; comparing it is like comparing shoe sizes.
Can easy runs be too slow?
Only if the stride deteriorates into a shuffle. Keep cadence reasonably high and let the pace be whatever the effort allows.
