Metric step counting
Most of the world measures walking in kilometres, and most pedometers count steps. The bridge is stride length: 8,000 steps at a 76 cm stride is 6.08 km. The calculator also gives miles, because plenty of apps still report them.
Stride length in centimetres
A brisk walk for an adult is usually 70–80 cm per step; running is 100–130 cm. If you do not know yours, walk 1 km on a measured route and divide 100,000 by the step count. That gives centimetres directly, with no unit conversion.
How many steps in a kilometre?
At 76 cm, about 1,316 steps. At 70 cm, 1,429. The variation is why step goals and distance goals are not interchangeable, and why the same 10,000 steps can be 6 km or 8 km depending on who is walking.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many km is 10,000 steps?
About 7.6 km at a 76 cm stride, or 6.4 km at 64 cm.
Is stride length the same as step length?
Strictly, stride is two steps (heel to heel on the same foot). Pedometers count steps, so this tool uses step length despite the common label.
Does pace change stride length?
Yes — walking faster lengthens the step up to a point, then cadence takes over. Running stride grows with speed much more.
